Withdrawing your MPF

See withdrawal and investment options for your MPF accrued benefits

What you need to know

You can withdraw your MPF accrued benefits all at once or in instalments when you're 65. All you need to do is file a claim on the grounds of retirement.

Alternatively, you can withdraw your accrued benefits derived from mandatory contribution earlier under the following circumstances.

Early MPF withdrawal conditions

Per MPF legislation, you can withdraw your accrued benefits earlier under the following circumstances.
Circumstance Details
Early retirement between ages 60 and 64 You can withdraw your accrued benefits in one go or in instalments on the grounds of early retirement if you've ceased employment and self-employment permanently.
A small balance below HKD5,000

You may be able to make an early withdrawal if your accrued benefits do not exceed HKD5,000. You'll need to make a statutory declaration that:

  • the time between your claim date and the date of your last mandatory contribution to any registered scheme exceeds 12 months
  • you do not have accrued benefits in any other registered scheme
  • you do not expect to become employed or self-employed in the future
Permanent departure from Hong Kong You'll be entitled to your accrued benefits on the grounds of permanent departure from Hong Kong only one in a lifetime, except as permitted by the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes (General) Regulation. You must provide proof that you have left or are about to leave Hong Kong permanently with no intention to return or resettle as a permanent resident.
Terminal illness You may be eligible to withdraw your accrued benefits early if you have a terminal illness that is likely to reduce your life expectancy to 12 months or less.
Total incapacity You may be eligible to withdraw your accrued benefits early if you can't work due to sickness or injury. Total incapacity refers to when you're permanently unable to do the kind of work that you were performing before becoming totally incapacitated.
Death In the event of your death, only your legal personal representative can claim your accrued benefits. This must be indicated in a Letter of Probate or Letter of Administration granted by the Probate Registry. Your personal representative should complete the relevant forms to make the withdrawal.

Your MPF withdrawal options

Your MPF accrued benefits are payable when you turn 65, or if you retire early at or after 60. You should consider your personal and financial circumstances—such as your age, payment terms, lifestyle, and investment appetite—so you can select which of these four withdrawal or investment options is best for you.
Option Details
Monthly regular withdrawal You can withdraw your MPF accrued benefits regularly on a monthly basis as a fixed amount via a one-time application. This way, you can make reasonable projections and manage your retirement planning by making use of your retirement funding and your remaining MPF accrued benefits to capture investment opportunities so you can keep up with inflation.
Partial withdrawal

You can withdraw your MPF accrued benefits partially through multiple applications from time to time. This way, you can spend freely but continue to capture your remaining MPF accrued benefits to capture investment opportunities.

Lump-sum withdrawal You can terminate all your MPF accounts and withdraw all your MPF accrued benefits. This will let you explore other potential investment opportunities or realise your retirement goals.
Continuous investment You won't need to do anything if you opt to keep your investments under the HSBC MPF scheme so you can continue to capture investment opportunities. You can decide whether to withdraw your MPF accrued benefits as a lump sum, partial withdrawals or regular monthly withdrawals at a later date.

Claim forms and declaration forms

You'll need to complete and submit the appropriate claim forms and required declaration forms to make a withdrawal.[@mpf-juratversion]

Withdrawal from specific contribution accounts

You can make partial withdrawals of at least HKD5,000 per withdrawal, up to 12 times in a financial year (1 July to 30 June) before your retirement, from any of these sub-accounts for free:

  • member's voluntary contributions
  • member's ORSO transfers
  • non-preserved MPF transfers
  • Flexi-contributions

You should not regard additional voluntary contributions including Flexi-contributions as a source of funds for short-term financial needs. This is because they're designed to help you plan for your retirement. We encourage you to consider your long-term financial needs for retirement before making such withdrawals.

To make a withdrawal from your sub-accounts, you'll need to complete and submit the relevant form with a designated withdrawal percentage. You won't be charged any handling fees.

You can find the forms you'll need in our document download centre.
